Ep. 009: Being OUT as a Business Owner

Because I preach a lot about showing up as yourself in business to attract clients that you’ll love working with, I’m going to practice what I preach.

I get pretty vulnerable in this episode (it took everything in me to not go back and re-record this one!), but I think it’s important for people to know who I really am, and how that informs my work.

I also know that visibility is powerful. There are probably many people in my audience who are in a similar situation but are fearful of being “out” as well, or perhaps they just have mixed feelings on it.

While I firmly believe that we are all on our own timeline, and we all have different lives that might make it more challenging to expose certain sides of ourselves, I also know that being vulnerable gives others the courage to be vulnerable too.

Although I’ve always had a lot of queer friends, and straight friends that are open-minded, it took the courage of a new-to-me-friend coming out in order for me to publicly come out in 2018. Courage is contagious!

At the end of the day I only want clients who are jazzed about working with me, and that starts with them knowing who I truly am.

Ep. 008: WTF is Bro-Marketing Culture?

Since I mention “bro-marketing” right in the intro to this podcast, I figured I should dedicate an episode to explaining what it is, and why I’m not here for it.

Bro-marketing has less to do with gender, and more to do with an attitude about business. It’s the mentality that says you should wake up early and go to bed late if you want to succeed. It tells you to forego everything that brings you joy if you want to be worthy of making money. It says that you can only earn enjoyment from your business when you reach a certain point, and along the way should be nothing but “hustle.”

And it encourages business owners to sell in a very pushy and aggressive way. You should know by now that I don’t believe in these methods. But I also think it’s important that I point them out so that we’re all on the same page when I mention it. And yes, women can absolutely hold bro-marketing beliefs too.

These are really common, and unfortunately some people teach them as good advice, but I’m going to advise against them. They aren’t super effective anyway, so even if you don’t feel uncomfortable with them, it’s not really worth your time or energy.

Selling, much like tennis or knitting, is a learned skill. But it’s less difficult to learn than some would have you believe.

It doesn’t have to be pushy or gross at all. You don’t have to railroad someone into spending money either. You can do it in a way that’s both comfortable for you and the other person!

It comes down to a belief in what you’re selling, practicing good communication to convey your product or service to a potential client, and confidently asking for the sale.

A lot of people online will tell you they have "the secret" to success, and you can have it if you're willing to pay for it. 

Realistically, the secret is not in the their "swipe file," it can't be "funnel hacked," and it's not in some super bodacious email marketing sequence that's going to bring you six-figures in 30 days. 

The people who peddle that are just modern-day "snake oil" salesmen, and I hope you never fall for that nonsense. 

It's something much more subtle and simple to overlook. But time and again, I've realized the people I work with who succeed do one thing, and the people who don't do another.

Ep. 002: The 3 Basics for Simple, Successful Marketing

Everyday on social media I’m certain you are bombarded with ads that entice you to enroll in someone’s online marketing program. There are ones to grow your email list, to sell on Instagram, to generate leads from Pinterest, and so on.

None of these are bad strategies, but there’s a really simple concept you need to know about marketing first. When you get down to it, all marketing boils down to is coming up with strategy to get people to know, like, and trust you so they want to spend money with you.

They have to know you exist, first. Then you have to warm them up so they get figure out if you’re a good fit. Then they have to trust that they’ll be happy with their decision to spend money with you.

This can look very different depending on your business, and the process can be shorter or longer depending on what you sell. But if you don’t understand this first, everything else you try to do under the umbrella of “marketing” will feel confusing and complex.
